Understanding COIDA
4 min read — Updated February 2026
What Is COIDA?
The Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA) provides compensation to employees who are injured or become ill at work. All employers must register with the Compensation Fund.
Fines for non-registration can be up to R100,000 or imprisonment. Every employer with one or more employees must register.
Who Must Register?
Every employer in South Africa, including households employing domestic workers, gardeners, or any other workers. There is no minimum number of employees — even one employee triggers the requirement.
How to Register
- Visit your nearest Department of Labour office or apply online at www.labour.gov.za.
- Complete the W.As.2 registration form.
- Submit the form with your ID, proof of address, and employee details.
- You'll receive a COIDA registration number.
SA Wages Pro has a step-by-step COIDA registration helper on the Compliance page that walks you through the entire process.
Return of Earnings
Every year by 31 March, you must submit a Return of Earnings to the Compensation Fund. This reports the total wages you paid in the previous year. SA Wages Pro's COIDA calculator helps you calculate your annual assessment amount.
Reporting Workplace Injuries
If an employee is injured at work, you must report it to the Compensation Commissioner within 7 days. SA Wages Pro includes a COIDA Incident Log where you can record workplace injuries with dates, descriptions, and outcomes.
